Exploratour - Does Europa have an Ocean?
5.) The area in this picture is called the Conamura Chaos Region. It is the region which provides scientists with the biggest clue about the existence of a subterranian ocean. Units which we talked about before which are called "chaotic" suggest the process called "rafting". This is a process familiar to geologists from the terrestrial Antarctic and Arctic. In rafting, blocks of ice from the glaciers break off and drift away to form icebergs. As they drift away they rotate.
In the picture shown here, blocks of the ground seem to have broken off from a main portion of the surface, and are rotated. You can tell that they are rotated because the "linea" on the rotated blocks stretches in a different direction than the linea in the rest of the picture.
Notice that for this to happen there must be a very soft layer underneath the icy block.
